Not an original idea, but one I originally learned about from Catherine van der Hoeff in November of 2008(sorry, I can't find the link to her blog). Take an old thread spool, add wool rovings, water and soap. Rinse, let dry then add floss and beads. Four or five of these were felted at the end of last year to prepare for the 2011 Bead Journal Project. Number two is in progress, but I'm afraid that they're just doodles, not journals. But what are they for, you ask? Well, I was thinking of either making a bowl full, or just sitting one on the coffee table to hold stray needles and pins. Any other suggestions???

large felted beads- or is that large beaded felts? a very novel idea and a great way to show off your beading skills. i can see them as doddles hanging off a bag, keyring, favourite fetishes or lucky charms.
Or put a ribbon through it and wear it around your neck? Very attractive.
Kaite and Jan, Thanks for your compliments and the great ideas. It feels good too!! It's very light, the wool is soft and the beads feel nice against your fingers.
They look like fun!!! You must be out from under all that work!!! to have time to stitch/bead/play
Beth, They are, but afraid not! Still buried in work, but decided that I needed to keep my hands busy now that the fall TV shows are back on.
ooooh - finally a use for thread spools! I absolutely hate throwing them away but couldn't think of a use for them. The old wooden ones are precious but the new plastic ones are hard to know what to do with. Great idea!!
Thanks, MA! I'd never use the wooden ones for this, but I have seen them wrapped with beaded fabric with the tops and bottoms still showing. I confess that the first one I felted was empty and the rest still had a bit of thread on them. I guess I was impatient! LOL!
What about Christmas ornaments?
These would make wonderful Christmas ornaments. I'm definitely going to start saving my empty spools!
Yvonne & Linda, Christmas ornaments would be a good use for my doodles. Of course, it would be for a very non-traditional tree as I have no plans to make a red/green one.
Linda, who says that I waited to finish the spools?
